This morning I was wandering around the site and stopped by the boulder under the ficus tree. I noticed what looked like unusual tiny dark shiny smooth soil cylindrical shapes in a crevice under the boulder. Now snake pop is in similar form but has a white urea cap with a chalk like appearance, so I figured it was most likely frog scat.
Soon enough, I found this fellow in a damp area under the boulder. Meet this handsome

specimen of the species Sphaerotheca breviceps, more commonly known as the Indian Burrowing Frog. As the name suggests, these frogs are good at making burrows. Burrowing ability is an important life skill which helps them survive during the harsh summer and winters in the Nandi Hills. These frogs prefer being around leafy litter and rocky areas in dried regions. They are active during night time.
I quickly photographing it before it scampered behind a small rock. I shall look out for it on my weekly visits to the site.
