About fifteen years ago, I had bought an apartment in Gachibowli in Hyderabad. A couple of years later, the construction was done and the builder informed me that the flats were ready to be handed over. Living in Bangalore and preoccupied with my work and family, it took me eight years (yes eight years !!) before I even travelled to Hyderabad to pick up a set of keys from the builder.
The Hyderabad apartment is still in the same state today - it took me another 7 years ( over 15 years since I bought the apartment) to go back and visit the apartment to see if it even existed and was not taken over by a squatter.

Clearly a poorly thought thru decision. This was the first and last time I have viewed the purchase of a home as a purely financial decision.
So a second home is no good if your family and you are not able to use it frequently. It should fit well into your intended lifestyle. Since it may not be where you are going to be all the time, you need to figure out how to make sure it stays well maintained so its usable.
With this prior experience, and given the proximity of this new site to my existing home, I decided that I'm going to use this home at least 50 % of the time that I'm in Bangalore. Arriving at this conclusion is important since it then defines what spaces one needs in the home and hence the size of the structure one builds.
