Its all about the location ...

Updated: Jul 9

A few years ago I used to visit Nagarahole Tiger Reserve frequently and I explored the idea of having a small home on land abutting the Kabini backwaters. In such a location one can dream of hearing trumpets and roars at dawn ! I even did a bit of research on land availability, but the driving distance from Bangalore (about 3.5 to 4.5 hours) was a deterrent.

The natural beauty and views from a location definitely matter when choosing a home site - as an example, my favourite resort in Phatthalung provides stunning views of Chinese fishing nets on the Thale Noi wetlands.

My home site is part of a plotted development that nestles between the Nandi Hills. While my plot is at the foot of Channagiri hill, the famous Nandagiri hill towers on the left with the Brahmagiri hill in the foreground.

On one of my initial visits, I spent a late evening having a cold beer at the developer's hospitality venue while watching the day come to a close. As the skies got dark, the moon rose over Nandagiri. It was a wonderful sight. The Nandi Hills (including Channagiri behind my plot) are forest land. This implies they will stay 'as is' for time to come. Abutting a forest may seem daunting to some, however for a wildlife enthusiast like me, there is no downside ! Additionally the hills are strewn with giant boulders and provide a stunning backdrop to the home. At Nandi Hills, nature presents its seasonal faces in all its glory - the summers are blazing, the monsoons are torrential and in winters the fog descends down the hill slopes.
